Originally called "John's Pool Hall", it changed its name to "John's Place" around 1937. Originally owned by Max John Gallistl, until 1942, when it was bought by Milton C. McClung and Paul S. Haney (see "Archive").

It was first raided for hosting an illegal poker game in 1934. Raided several more times in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1943, it was described by a visiting reporter as having twelve poker tables. In 1947, it became "The Big Headed Kid", also a tavern and card room.
