El Camino Real Road
Palo Alto, California
Type: Illegal
Status: Closed
Open: c. 1936, Close: 1938

A swanky nightclub and illegal casino operated by Frank "Dingo" Mendoza. Located south of Palo Alto, near the neighborhood of Mayfield. It was raided on 10/17/1937, with gambling equipment, including two roulette wheels, seized. It continued to operate until it burned to the ground on 11/20/1938.

The 20 year old building had originally been the location of the "Chicken Shack" speakeasy, which also had gambling.

Mason & Co. shipped 1000 of these hub mold chips in three denominations to L. Strauss, Cloverleaf Club, Mayfield, on 10/29/1937. The chips were ordered twelve days after the club was raided, and were likely for new design replacement chips.

About Illegal Casinos - by their nature, information about illegal, or unlicensed, casinos is hard to find and difficult to verify. Information presented on the ChipGuide about these casinos is provided as the result of our best efforts but may not be 100% accurate. Even if the information is accurate, gamblers move around and may take their equipment with them; items used in one casino may have also been used in others. Please send verified information about illegal casinos to the ChipGuide so that we may improve our accuracy.
