California's first chartered private social club, whose membership originally consisted of San Diego's business and political elite. Membership opened to women in 1918. Beginning in the 1940s, membership became less exclusive, and peaked at around 1700 in 1971.

The club moved to 235 Broadway in 1909, and again to 190 Broadway in 1963, and moved a final time to 1055 First Avenue in 1971.
