WinCo Foods can trace its beginnings back to 1967 when Ralph Ward and Bud Williams founded a discount warehouse grocery store in Boise, Idaho under the name of Waremart. The company operated stores under the names of Waremart Food Centers and Cub Foods until 1999. Corporate held a contest with its employees to come up with a new name. Eight employees came up with WinCo Foods; some saying Winco stands for Winning Company, while the others used WINCO because it contained the first letter of every state they originally called home (Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, Oregon). Each employee who came up with WINCO got the grand prize.
