(New York Times, November 5, 1967) Huntington Hartford, the A. & P. heir, changed the name from Hog to Paradise when he bought the island in 1959. He then built the 52-room Ocean Club on a beachfront site east of the area now occupied by the new hotel and casino. The club was not a success, largely because Mr. Hartford was unable to obtain a gambling license. This meant that Ocean Club guests had to take a boat back across Nassau Harbor to gamble in Nassau's old Bahamian Club. In January of 1966, Mr. Hartford sold 75 per cent of the island to Paradise Island, Ltd., a Bahamian-franchised company owned by the Mary Carter Paint Company of Florida. Mary Carter executives also make up the board of Island Hotel Company, Ltd., principal owner of the new Paradise Island Hotel, which will be operated by Loew's Hotels. Mr. Hartford currently holds a 20 per cent interest in the Island Hotel Company. The key to the opening of the Paradise Casino is the gambling license. The Bahamian Club, Nassau's gambling center for 45 years, will close in early December and its license will be transferred to the Paradise Casino. At present, there are no plans for a new casino in Nassau.
In 1987, it was purchased by Donald Trump and then resold to Merv Griffin in 1988.
