The Grand Hotel was built by order of the President of Brazilian Republic, Getulio Vargas. Huge building, belonging to the State, was started in 1938 and opened in 1944.
Built in neo-classical style, it had luxurious facilities including restaurants, bars, a cinema and a casino. Located in a large park (Parque do Barrreiro), the hotel building occupied an area of 50000m2.
The Hotel was known for Grande Hotel Barreiro, and the casino by Casino Barreiro. It was immediately frequented by personalities such as politicians, industrialists, high finance representatives and artistic celebrities. The large influx of guests justified the existence of four daily flights to Araxa.
The Casino was open only two years, until 1946, the year that the gambling was banned in Brazil.
The Hotel still exists today, keeping its original decor.
