The spa of Araxá developed from the beginning of the 20th century, mainly due to the initiative of individuals. From the 1930's and 1940's, as part of an official policy for the promotion of tourism in the thermal spas, Araxá presents a great development, with the development of infrastructures promoted by the Government. Hotels, resorts, casinos, etc. were built. The Estancia do Barreiro-Araxá was inaugurated in 1944, but enjoyed little time of the great motors of the bathing cities- the gambling was forbidden in Brazil in 1946 and the casinos closed. It still lasted for two decades, until the 1960s when the dismantling of Brazilian thermal baths took place, motivated by the shocks caused by the prohibition of gambling, by the lack of official support for the end of the Estado Novo political regime, and by the fall in demand of water as a therapeutic treatment. |
