The enterprise located on the beach of Areia Preta, was built by the
state between 1947 and 1951 to be a naval school. The Hotel Radium was
inaugurated in 1953, by the dealer Alberto Quatrini Bianchi (a
gambling entrepreneur who had managed at least the two most important
casino in Baia, the Hotel Palave and the Casino Tabaris and the
Casino of the Farroupilha Exhibition in Porto Alegre). The concession
period was 15 years.
It was this businessman who set up the casino in the hotel, although
the game was banned in Brazil in 1946.
It was one of the most chic and grandiose hotels in southeastern
Brazil, receiving the most distinguished guests. DC3 planes brought
from Rio de Janeiro personalities that lodged and gambled there.
Airplanes arrived on Fridays and returned on Mondays. Great parties
took place in the restaurant and in casino the gambling worked (there
were two roulettes and a card game known as pif paf). The hotel had
besides the casino, bar and restaurant and places reserved for
treatment of the clients, who flocked to physiotherapeutic and
rheumatological treatments, with the black sands. Millionaires from all
over the world spent there seasons of up to three months for
treatment, parties and gambling.
In 1964 the Government enforced the law that prohibited gambling in
Brazil. The concession was not renewed because of the dealer's lack of
interest and the hotel went into decline. It declared bankruptcy in
the decade of 80. |
