Then 71 casinos were closed all over Brazil. The history of casinos in Poços de Caldas begins in the 19th century, when the city was a small village. Records indicate that by 1890 the hotels, receiving tourists in search of thermal treatments, had gambling . First casino was officialy registered in 1905, and many clubs and casinos settled in the city, that was considered by many as the Las Vegas in Brazil. The gambling chips circulated as regular currency in the city. Casino da Urca was built in 4 months and was inaugurated on 31 December 1942, being frequented by wealthy families. Closed in 1946. The building now houses a cultural center.
