The casinos ( brazilians use the term cassinos) arrived in Brazil during the Empire and were attended even by the Emperor D.Pedro II. With the establishment of the republic in 1917 went underground.In 1934 President Getulio Vargas allowed the reopening of casinos.By decree of 30 April 1946, the government of President Marechal Dutra ordered the closure of casinos. Then 71 casinos were closed all over Brazil.The history of casinos in Poços de Caldas begins in the 19th century, when the city was a small village. Recorsd indicate that by 1890 the hotels, receiving tourists in search of thermal treatments, had gambling . First casino was officialy registered in 1905, and many clubs and casinos settled in the city, that was considered by many as the Las Vegas in Brazil. The gambling chips circulated as regular currency in the city. Cine Teatro Polytheama has opened in 1911, with luxurious facilities, built as a opera theater . It was built with the aim of attracting tourists to the thermal baths, which could bet large sums and require refinement. The great social events of Pocos de Caldas, including receptions and gala dinners, took place in Polytheama. Polytheama joined the casino to the nearby Grand Hotel- was known as Casino Caldense, The Polytheama worked until 1946, when the game was banned in Brazil . It was demolished.
