In 1885 a railway was installed between Rio Grande and the beach, located at 18kms, which became known as Balneário Vila Siqueira (name derived from the director of the railway company). In order to accommodate the bathers, the Hotel Cassino (The hotel was renamed Hotel atlantico, when in 1919 it was acquired by Sociedade Anónima Companhia Balnear Atlântica ) was inaugurated in 1890. Besides accommodating the holidaymakers, the hotel offered the necessary diversions to the bathers, like dances, theatrical and musical spectacles and game. It had 136 rooms, reading and social rooms, theater and gambling rooms. The place, providing moments of leisure and entertainment, became the leisure center of the aristocracy and the great businessmen who took place there for the gambling. The Hotel Cassino became the development lever of the Spa in such a way that Vila Siqueira, changed its name to Praia do Cassino, name that remains until today. The persecution of Italians and Germans, strong communities in the region, and the banning of gambling in 1946, caused damage to the local economy, only recovered years later.
