From Luis Alvarez: The Chantilly was one of the most famous night clubs in the history of the DR. Probably peaked in mid 70's to late 70's. The casino, like the night club was very fancy and was for the DR upper class. Although very small, it was designed for people going to the night club to stop in the casino before and after the shows.
The casino never had a true license, they had a permit, so they were exposed to being closed at any time there was a political change. Sure enough, it did not last more than 1-2 years before they closed it.
The logo on the chips was the logo of the night club and the reason that there were so many different $1 chips was because they started to play with the colors to see which looked better and eventually had ordered about 4-5 different $1 chips.
When the casino closed, they had to burn ALL the chips with witnesses. But, the owner, still in love with his creation, hid a relatively small number of the lower denomination chips in the vault of his other office. |
