| The Helgoland (in German) or Heligoland (in English) is an island in the North Sea. On 1714 the island was seized by Denmark, , which has given the Island to Great Britain in 1807 .By 1826, the island became a seaside spa and had actually developed into a popular vacation resort for wealthy German visitors. On1890, the German Empire traded some of its colonial interests to Great Britain for the island. Helgoland officially became part of the Imperial German State of Schleswig-Holstein. Although gambling houses were strictly forbidden in the victorian England,the existence of casinos on Heligoland was more or less tolerated by british governors, There were several gambling houses in the Conversations houses, hotels and pubs, The governors knew that this was against the english law, but they also knew that without gambling the Island would loose gests and much-needed income, and if forbided the gambling would divert to other German spa towns. In 1870, English Governor closed all legal casinos. Under german rule starting in 1890, gambling was forbidden until 1933 and after that, heavily regulated. In the 1980s there was a “legal” casino for two years in Helgoland. Then the official one Concession withdrawn and it went on illegally for a few more weeks until the police finally closed the casino. The CASINO HELGOLAND had little to do with the pre-war casinos.It was just the first floor above a Helgoland pub. Today she is called "Sailors" (formerly "Knieper”). |
