Constructed in 1886-7, the original Hotel San Stefano (it was remodeled more than once) was conceived by Boghos Nubar Pasha, son of Armenian statesman-administrator Nubar Nubarian, a sometime prime minister of Egypt, inspired in the casinos and seaside resorts dotting the Franco-Belgian coast between Deauville and Oostende.
The Hotel and Casino San Stefano, was elegant, old world, and often cheerful. Concerts, balls and dinners were a nightly affair, but not many people makes the long journey from town to Ramleh. And so for many years the Hotel and Casino San Stefano was the haunt only of the inhabitants of Ramleh. In the 1940s, when the British school Victoria College was requisitioned as a hospital by British Army, the College moved its premises to the Hotel and Casino San Stefano.
In the post War, there was a diminution of Alexandria as Egypt's commercial center and the subsequent departure of the city's powerful taipans, San Stefano fell on hard times, as Alexandria no longer featured on the international cafe society's itinerary (based in an article of Cairo Times 01.01.1999).Sadly, in the 1990s San Stefano was pulled down and in its place rose the inevitable modern construction: a huge concrete tower blocking the sky, enclosing a hotel (in this case the Four Seasons).
