The Cercle des Moutards later the Cercle des Phocéens gets to the city of Marseille lease on part of the castle park Borély: thus was created on November 4 1860 the Hippodrome Borely in the same location as the current racecourse. In the 19th century, the Cercle des Phocéens had great success with the Marseille bourgeoisie - in this cercle, we meet to chat, have a drink, play cards and chess, or sponsor horse racings. According the book “ Marseille, Album des Etrangers et Visiteurs, 1833” –“Marseille has several cercles, among which stands out the Cercle Phocéens. The cercle is the larger and the richest, and this is the cercle where the gambing is stronger. In the Cercle we play all card games, and other games of patience and science, such as chess, checkers, backgammon and dominó. Here we find two beautiful billiards.” Settled at 19, Rue Grignan, the cercle was founded in 1787, and closed after Liberation in 1945, due to its colaboration with the occupant. The cercle was refounded, settled at 22 Rue Montgrand, being today a bridge club.
