In the early 1920s, Lake Montigny-en-Gohelle was built as a true center of tourism and sports attractions.The lake was created at the initiative of the mayor of the town at the time, which benefited from a basin of water as a result of mining subsidence to turn it into a center of tourism and sports attractions . Facilities that complemented the site: a small circular train and canoe rides on the lake or to the casino that sat in the middle of the lake. The casino was planted in the middle of the artificial lake, and we went there by the air carrier, or by boat.. But the main attraction were the cycling races organized on the velodrome installed around the lake. The complex, opened in 1925, was a true regional attraction of the interwar period with a beautiful green setting in the heart of a mining area. Following various problems, exploitation of the lake ceased on the eve of the Second World War and the lake and its casino fell gradually into forgetfulness
