In the early twentieth century, a London company was attracted to the Balzi Rossi site, in Italy, but almost on the border with France, where there is a Paleolithic Museum that attracted more than seven thousand visitors a year, attracted by the visit to the unearthed caves. At the end of the nineteenth century, a restaurant was established on the site which soon can be considered well underway. In February 1911, the “Casino des Grottes Rouges”, in the municipality of Ventimiglia, opened its doors. It was connected with a tramway to nearby Menton and shortly afterwards a daring lift connected it with the Ponte San Luigi customs post.
For ten years, the presence of roulette, banned on the Côte d'Azur, attracted a large number of enthusiasts, who deserted the nearby Cote, but in 1922, an uninterrupted series of suspected landslides on the connecting road with Menton suggested the British to withdraw the roulette. ; just as the Italian government decided to cancel the licenses present in Ventimiglia, Bordighera and Ospedaletti, in favor of the sole presence of the San Remo Casino, opened in 1905. |
