The Assembleia Recreativa de Espinho ( Espinho Recreational Assembly) was founded in 1861 by members of the aristocracy who frequented Espinho beach. It began to work in a rented house, where they were realized conviviums, balls, gambling etc. It was later built an own building, which was inaugurated on September 17, 1865. The building had two floors. Downstairs there was a cafe, with pool tables and other gambling tables. On the top floor was a ballroom with a capacity of 1000 people. The assembly, often restricted to members, was one of the most important venues in Espinho with gambling. In 1915 the Assembly was dissolved and the building was sold to a private individual. In the same it was later installed the Casino Peninsular . In 1927, the year of gambling legalization , was sold to the company concessionaire of the gambling that installed the Casino de Espinho.
