The gambling played an important role in almost all cafes in the city, having some coffees a separate room for this purpose. It was played billiards, chess, Keno and card games (monte, whist, etc.).
Café Aguia d'Ouro was one of the most prestigious, bringing together a rich clientele of personalities linked to activities, cultural, political and intellectual of Porto. The Café founded on January 27, 1839, was located in Praça da Batalha, and owned an inn on the first floor. Its first owner was Luis Ferreira de Carvalho until 1904.
The cafe closed in the 30s for renovation. Reopens on 7 February 1931. The first floor no longer has the inn and turns into a game room. The Café definitely ends in mid-1978.
With side entrance to the cafe was located on the second floor a theater, the Teatro Águia d'Ouro that from 1908, it also opened the cinema. In the building is now installed an hotel.
