| Vila do Conde is a fishing village where the beach tourism has developed from the mid-nineteenth century, with the construction of chalets and hotels for accommodation of tourists. For amusement of the same is installed in 1907 a first casino in Theatre Afonso Sanches.On August 7, 1918 is inaugurated the Grande Casino de Vila do Conde. The building located on the corner of Avenidas Bento Freitas and Julio Graça, had two floors:
On the ground floor were installed a luxury café and a restaurant. On the first floor the Assembleia de Vila do Conde Vila, with large ballroom, gambling room, reading rooms, etc.
Access to the Casino was limited to its members, but extended to guests. In addition to the gambling, the casino promoted concerts, dances, etc.
The casino ended at the end of the bathing season and opened normally in July. In 1933 it only opened in August and ended on 30 September. In 1934 with the opening of the Casino da Povoa de Varzim (4 kms away) the casino no longer has gambling and went into decline. It kept some seasonal recreational activities up to 40 years. Today the building is occupied by the Municipal Youth Centre. |
