Jack O-Lantern Lodge Silver Lake Eagle River, Wisconsin 54521 MAP Type: Illegal Status: Closed Open: 1930s, Close: 1940s The Jack O’Lantern Lodge has had a very varied and infamous history. It was built in 1932 and owned by Chuck Taylor. During the 1930s and 1940s it was known as a glamorous resort that also offered gambling. In the late 1940s, the owner was involved in thoroughbred horse racing and owned a racehorse named Man Crazy. It was sold to Allen Dorfman in 1950 and was used by Teamster Union leaders. There were rumors of mob involvement and in the 1970s it was part of the FBI investigation searching for Jimmy Hoffa. In 1963 part of the lodge was purchased by the River Recreation Association and is now the Eagle River Sports Arena. It was known for hockey, figure skating and snowmobile racing. In 1994 it was listed in the Historic Register due to its unusual roof construction. The Arena is home to the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame. Because of its colorful history the lodge has been referenced in two novels… Dead Angler by Victoria Houston (2000) and The Spymaster by Donald Freed (1980).
