The first Kursaal was designed in 1850´s as a temporary and easily degradable construction because Ostend was then a fortified town and the sea belonged to the military domain. The building was mainly of wood. Both the interior and exterior witnessed a strong Moorish character.
Due to space limitations, the Kursaal rebuilt in 1858 and 1865. The second renovation was including a new party and concert hall with a glass roof.
In 1877 the building was demolished.
1878 - A new building, a new location in the west end of the dike chosen.
1907 - Larger and more luxurious.In 1940, the Kursaal destroyed by the Germans. Instead the Germans in 1943 built a bunker complex that gives them a significant strategic look at the sea gave up.
1953 - A modernist Kursaal.
After the war started with the reconstruction of the Kursaal. His design was chosen because of the curved glass walls facing the sea. This design was a rectangular volume with a semicircular extension that follows the curve of the seawall. |
