| According to 1876 records “ In Povoa, as well Espinho, Foz and Figueira, in short, in every portuguese beach, the competition around the green cloth is curiously diversified. Once gambling is forbidden, and considering that a gambling house is a secret place, in every caffé there is a complementary room, with a misterious and secret entrance, in which roulette or monte is gambled.” There were more than ten “ casinos” in Povoa in those times. This was only achieved in late 1927, with gambling regulations , being gambling concentrated in one casino only- Casino Monumental da Povoa de Varzim.Café-Casino Chinês, founded in 1886, was until the advent of Casino Monumental da Povoa in 1928, the main reference of gambling in Póvoa. Closed in 1928. Even after the rules of gambling in 1927 ,until the completion aand opening of Casino Monumental da Povoa, wich was settled temporarily at the premises of Casino Chinês, ,hosted the gambling , then legalized, between 1929 and 1933 |
