July 03, 1985 By United Press International. A federal judge has shut down a high-stakes, Las Vegas-style casino on the L`Anse Indian reservation in Zeba near Baraga, ruling the operation violates federal law. U.S. District Judge Wendell Miles said in a 33-page opinion released Tuesday that casino operators Fred and Sybil Dakota were advised that in Michigan, ``gambling activity which is not specifically permitted and regulated is prohibited. ``Defendants went into this gambling business with their eyes open, knowing that this would be a test of federal law,`` he stated. Last September, Michigan Atty. Gen. Frank Kelley and the Justice Department filed suit against the Dakotas, who are members of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, charging them with violating the federal Organized Crime Control Act, which prohibits managing or financing an illegal gambling business.
