During the period of 1st World War , Lisbon became a city of fun and unruled pleasure. Some magnificent and luxurious casinos were opened. Several clubs were established down town, the most commercial and most social life area of the capital, some of which in luxurious palaces. The night clubs , with dancing, gambling, restaurant and shows, had great installations with smoking living rooms, party rooms, dancing rooms, several gambling rooms…even manicure and barber shops- everything the money could buy. This illicit activity was only possible with the connivance of the police department, which closed its eyes in Exchange of some special favours . This was only achieved in late 1927, with gambling regulations , defining specific gambling areas -thermal and beach zones and no longer in the cities. Bristol Club, owned by Mário Freitas Ribeiro ,was opened in 11 March 1918, in a classic Luis XVI décor. Was completely remodeled in 1926, in a modernist style and stuffed with modernist sculptures and paintings of the most renowned artists. Was the most famous club in Lisbon. Closed in 1928.
