In the nineteenth century the casinos, were the meeting place for people of similar socio-economic, professional and political conditions :the members went to them to keep a chat, to read the press, to play a game of pool and card games, or have a snack in the company of friends, something like English clubs. The casinos, were private clubs for the sociability of bourgeois and aristocratic classes. Despite its regulations banned the gambling, the same was present in almost the casinos. On January 16, 1837, has opened the first Casino de Madrid in number 2 of the Calle de Visitacion, as an association of recreation for elegant and chosen people. After than the casino had several head quarters, until the construction of its own building, that opened in 1910 at 15 Calle Alcalá. The new building allowed to offer to the members new services such as restaurant, music room, gambling room, ball room,hairdressing, library, carriages, kitchen and even a phone system hearing concerts were held at the Royal Theatre. With the Second Republic the casino experienced its worst years until its closure produced by the Republican forces. With the beginning of the Civil War, its facilities were transformed into an Hospital. At the end of the war in 1939, the casino reopened its doors . In the beginning of the 80´s the casino entered in a period of economic decline. From 1983 until today there have been several reforms and a private company commercially operates the casino.
