As Virgil “Red” Berry was building his reputation, he operated the Turf Club on Soledad St in San Antonio, Texas. As an up-and-coming gambler, Berry was harassed many times by the police in their efforts to clean up the city. In 1945, Red Berry, future state senator, was humiliated when the police ordered him to saw the legs off his Turf Club dice tables before confiscating them. |
