| Royan had a first casino of Foncillon from 1843. Built in neo-classical style, on the initiative of owners and local merchants ,who founded the Societe des Bains de Royan. The casino was surrounded by a garden but was back to the sea.The casino was attended by a distinct society dominated her aristocracy of Bordeaux and provincial. Owned a gambling room, billiard room, party room and a concert hall and dancing and a reading room.
Judged very meager at the end of the century, it was replaced by a new casino in 1885, built between 1882 and 1885, situated very close to the previous one, but with a view of the sea.The casino was opened in 07.16.1885. This casino with a neo baroque style, was composed primarily of a gambling room, restaurant and a large ballroom that could behave thousand people.
The first casino building will be transformed into City Hall. The Casino de Foncillon will continue in business even after the creation of the Municipal Casino in 1895. It will be purchased in 1899 by Société du Casino Municipal, the owner of the Casino Municipal. The Casino de Foncillon was closed in 1909 due to low profits caused by the new rules of the gambling. It will be successively owned by the Town Hall, Museum and Party Room. In June 1940 the Germans occupy Royan and the building will be transformed into Kriegsmarine messe . Like most of the city will be destroyed by the bombing of January 5, 1945.
