Anthony Cornero operated three gambling ships, the S.S. Tango, S.S. Rex, and S.S. Lux, off the coast of California between 1934 and 1946.

In 1946, Cornero bought a retired minesweeper named Bunker Hill, and refurbished it with a dance floor and a 100 foot bar. It was open for less than a week off the coast of Long Beach in August 1946, before being seized by federal authorities.

Photograph from August 1946 (Los Angeles Public Library).
